Health, Happiness, and Well-Being through Psychology

This article is based on the speech about “Health Happiness and Well-being through Psychology” was delivered by Dr. Priyantha Gamini Jayasinghe who is a psychiatrist of base hospital Mirigama (MBBS (SL), D.Psy(Colombo), MSc(Kings), PHD(Oxford)). He made this valuable speech at the UCSC auditorium, under Enhancement program for the 1st year students of UCSC undergraduate program on 17th September 2018.

As I understood, this lecture was mainly based on How actually human beings behave according to their psychological states, psychologically illnesses & how to get rid of them. This speech has contained more facts and practical issues of the mentality those are very helpful to the young generation.

Let's talk about the connection between the Thoughts, Emotions & Behavior now.
Interconnection between the Thoughts, Emotions & Behavior
Above image gives a brief idea about the the topic that we are talking about. It actually means that when the thoughts are born, some of the feelings are became the emotions. Then the emotions are became the behavior and the behavior affects us our emotions and generate new thoughts in our mind too. And also some of the emotions can make us new thoughts too. And there are some thoughts that we can directly raise to the behavior of us. Interesting right ?  0:-)

To maintain the well-being of our-selves, we should have these four aspects of wellbeing.
  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
If someone is not healthy in physical, he can easily know that by their physical conditions. But if someone is not good in his mental state, sometimes either he or the others could not be easily understand it quickly. If someone is mentally down, he usually loses the accuracy & capacity of his day-today activities. And also his reactions can be change while facing the common things of his life.

Spiritually healthiness is also a very affective aspect of being healthy. Let's talk about the stress that is more affects the spiritual healthiness.
Stress is your body's way of responding to any kind of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad experiences. When people feel stressed by something going on around them, their bodies react by releasing chemicals into the blood.
I think actually stress is a some kind of challenge that we have to face in our day-today life. The way we face the stress is responsible to our future. Let's think about the stages of stress.

There will be range of stress that will increase the accuracy of our work. Being in that range is good, but if someone exceeded that range it is not good for his life. It will reduce your potential to go through your life. Regulating emotions is the best way of maintaining the healthy life. Let's look at it now.

Ineffective Strategies of regulating emotions

  • Avoidance
  • Rumination and Worry
  • Suppression
  • Blaming oneself
  • Blaming others
  • Poor health habits
  • Withdrawal
  • Alcohol and drugs
"Actually for chemists alcohol is also a solution"  :-P

Effective Strategies of regulating emotions
  • Mindfulness
  • Breathing
  • Positive reappraisal
  • Visualization
  • Nature
  • Physical Activity
  • Constructive Activity - FLOW
  • Finding support from others
  • Working hard to achieve a goal
The way we react to those situations decides the path of our future to be. Within that we have to take care of our selves at those situations well.

Being happy & enjoying the life is the best way of facing day-today problems successfully. Being unhappy effects ourselves badly.  Low performance of the immune system, less sleep or more sleep, unhealthy eating habits are most probably can be the results of the unhappiness. If you are effected you have to be make more attention to that.

Is Happiness within your control?

This chart shows genetics play a big role, but turns out our circumstances don't necessarily have to have a big hold on our well-being. That means wellbeing is 50% CHOICE daily practises in life have a impact of well-being.

Benefits through happiness
  • Health & Longevity
  • Good social relationships
  • Productivity at work
It is very shame to mention that Sri Lanka got the most suicide rate in the world in 2018 according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It is 35.3 suicides per 100k peopleThe best way of get rid that is spreading knowledge. If you can't handle the situation it is totally OK to go for counseling sessions.

As the young generation we have the responsibility to maintain our good health to make our future successful. Remember that everything is on our hands. We have to prevent from bad health habits & have the responsibility to prevent others from those and help them.
Yes, Prevent & Improve !
We had a very good time with the Prof. We gathered more valuable facts to our lives. We all are guided by him for make ourselves better. Thank you sir for making our time more valuable on that day.
